Maren

Raised in Rillford by her mother, Ilyra, Maren has learned to watch hands, breathing and the small changes people dismiss when they are trying to appear well.

What lies beneath the wound

Maren has seen the ordinary injuries of a working village: burns, falls, bites and hands opened by broken wood. She respects the people who clean, bind and watch those injuries rather than treating care as a moment of spectacle.

Her attention does not stop at what a person says. She notices the held breath before pain, the hand protected without thought and the tension that tells a different story from the face.

A life close to others

Rillford has given Maren a community in which people know one another's histories, habits and evasions. That closeness can protect. It can also make privacy difficult when a new ability or fear begins to change the familiar shape of a life.

Among Rian, Celia and Elias, she often names the question beneath the argument. She does not always enjoy the attention that follows when she does.
