Elias has learned that a moral lesson becomes dishonest when it erases the price of choosing correctly. He asks children what they would do with a lost purse, then keeps asking when hunger, ownership and community responsibility make the first answer less comfortable.
His instinct is structural. He wants to know what holds, what transfers pressure and where responsibility goes when authority and knowledge belong to different people.
A sanctuary full of records
Oren's sanctuary is prayer chamber, schoolroom, records office and shelter depending on the hour. Elias grew up close to the births, promises, disputes and questions that make a community more than a collection of houses.
