Responsibility before certainty

Rian has been taught to notice what practical work reveals: a failing drainage channel, a frightened horse, a person missing from a count, a choice that cannot wait for perfect information. He is comfortable with effort and far less comfortable with standing aside.

That instinct is useful. It can also become pressure—the belief that if he can see what must be done, he ought to be the one who does it.

Raised at the edge

Rillford lies beside vineyards, working roads and the western shadow of Drenwood. Rian knows its boundaries as places maintained by people: walls reset stone by stone, tracks kept passable, animals watched and neighbours counted.

Garran's lessons have given him a practical vocabulary for danger without explaining every history behind it. At the saga's beginning, Rian understands the instruction long before he understands all that shaped it.
