Oren Pell

Oren serves Rillford through its sanctuary, keeping records, teaching children and refusing to make a difficult moral choice sound simple for the comfort of the listener.

Memory with a place to live

The sanctuary keeps births, deaths, marriages, disputes and promises people later claim they never made. Oren's work gives communal memory a physical home without pretending that a written line ends every argument.

The yard outside becomes a schoolroom, meeting place or shelter as needed. He treats each use as part of the same responsibility: making room for people to tell the truth before someone stronger tells it for them.

Teaching judgement

Oren's questions are not delays disguised as wisdom. He uses them to show where a person's first answer has ignored hunger, authority, ownership or the cost carried by someone else.

Elias has inherited the habit but not merely copied it. Their relationship allows disagreement because responsibility, in Oren's view, cannot be forced without becoming obedience.
